Such a person is Enrique "The Volcano" Oliu

http://www.cbsnews.com/video/watch/?id=5247974n&tag=cbsnewsSectionContent.11

The Blind Sportscaster

The Spanish voice of Tampa Bay Rays baseball, Enrique " The Volcano" Oliu was born blind.

Kelly Cobiella reports on the sports broadcaster's gift to explain a game he has never seen.

Enrique Oliu, the radio voice of Tampa Bay Rays baseball. (CBS)

(CBS) They call him " the volcano." From the first pitch to the last out, Enrique Oliu, the Spanish voice of Tampa Bay Rays baseball starts talking - and doesn't stop.

" When you listen to him talk, you can visualize what he's saying," says Rays fan Manny Carmona. " Now, the question is how does he visualize it?"

How indeed, when he's never seen a single game. Enrique Oliu has been blind since birth.

Oliu told CBS News Correspondent Kelly Cobiella, " I see light and that's about it. And the rest of it I just imagine what it would be."

While his partner in the booth calls the play. While Oliu listens to the crack of the bat, and the sound of the crowd to fill in the colorful details.

" He listened to the radio when he was a kid and he heard the TV broadcast. And that's what he always wanted to do. And he would never let anyone tell him he couldn't," says co-worker Mark Haze.

He talks to everyone, and soaks up everything.

" He's talking to me about base running, and the instinct's right there," says Rays manager Joe Maddon. " How do you know about instincts without ever seeing a base runner, I have no idea."

Oliu says there's certain things that you just " feel, plus homework, plus everything else."

Everything else includes an understanding wife, Debbie. They met eleven years ago on a blind date.

Every morning, she reads him the sports page. And every baseball evening, she whispers sweet statistics in his ear.

What's truly remarkable is not how Enrique Oliu sees baseball, but how he sees himself.

He doesn't think of himself as amazing.

" I think of myself as being a blind schmuck that's been fortunate to get a microphone."

He's got a passion for life, as much as the game.

This Month’s Belly Laugh

providing some humor to make your day better. Be sure to pass it along, as everyone is helped with a smile.

An elderly man in Florida had owned a large farm for several years. He had a large pond in the back, fixed up nice—with picnic tables, horseshoe courts, and some apple and peach trees. The pond was properly shaped and fixed up for swimming when it was built.

One evening the old farmer decided to go down to the pond, as he hadn't been there for a while, and look it over. He grabbed a five gallon bucket to bring back some fruit.

As he neared the pond, he heard voices shouting and laughing with glee.

As he came closer he saw it was a bunch of young women skinny-dipping in his pond. He made the women aware of his presence and they all went to the deep end. One of the women shouted to him, "We're not coming out until you leave!"

The old man frowned, "I didn't come down here to watch you ladies swim naked or make you get out of the pond naked." Holding the bucket up he said, "I'm here to feed the alligator."

Moral: Old men can still think fast.

Please send your feedback!

I’ve received many notes and calls from those enjoying Connections. I’ve also gotten quite a few interesting things about and for the blind, which I always try to include. And I’ve even gotten yet, a few more letters from readers that seemed to want to reprimand me about some of the changes that have taken place. I say only that Connections has become a stockpile of what you, the readers are submitting. That is what I wished it to be. If you don’t contribute, you won’t get what you want and you’ll be stuck with the way that things are getting’ done. smile

The past 18 months of editing Connections has been such a wonderful experience. I’m just loving my work . I’m meeting all kinds of interesting people and learning new things every day. It has been a great blessing how life has changed.

Just in the last 15 months, I also met an incredible partner and now, fiancée and am planning to move to England in February.

Connection’s office is being moved and publication will go on as usual.

We wish many more of you to send in your contributions so Connections can be a real place to Connect with what you want and need.

Also remember to send your links of the sites you most visit so they can be added to EverythingBlind.com. There have been several new additions and I have a whole list of new sites, yet to be added. So, if you haven’t visited in a while check it out!

Looking for help in finding a particular individual

I am in Macedonia. 10 years ago, I studied in the U.S. After coming home, I was in contact with a particular blind individual who was helping me acquire some information about university scholarships for international students. I got his address from Labina and Teona Mitevski, two Macedonian sisters involved with Macedonian movie production, and I believe they got to know about him by a common friend of theirs called Goran. I believe that this blind individual was either English or American and I believe he is in his 30s now. He studied at Oxford 10 years or more ago and that he was pursuing a very unusual degree in history or architecture. If he is reading this magazine, or if anyone thinks they know him, please contact me. I would really like to get back in touch with him.

Do you travel to out of the way places? Do you enjoy writing jokes and humorous pieces? Many small publishers cannot pay large sums of money, and some do not pay at all, but this doesn't make them less useful to begin building up your portfolio of published works. When the time comes to submit your piece for paid publication, you'll have lots of clips from various publications to present to editors.

Connections is one of those small non paying publications at the moment. The copyright remains your own, so you can publish any of your works elsewhere. I am especially interested in blind and visually impaired writers, but not exclusively. I hope to hear from you soon.
