As most often happens when a person loses vision, they also lose the urge to just get up and move. The simple act of getting to the kitchen to get a glass of water, or to take a walk to the store, is not as simple a task as it once was.
Losing this "uneasiness" that comes with vision loss and blindness is a huge hurdle to overcome, yet a very simple one to achieve.
It is however, very necessary if one wants to keep or get fit.
In the beginning, it is important for the individual to overcome the innate fear that they will trip and fall or knock something over, or run into someone/something.
As blind people, this sometimes will happen, heck, as sighted people, this will happen.
For some truly inspiring and sometimes comical stories that our visitors have written about their experiences
with learning mobility, visit our blog and chat room page.
The best lesson concerning these issues, was for me to "slow down"
I just simply had to get used to the fact that I wasn't going to win any races, or a time trial in anything. But, I did have to get up and move if I wanted to do anything!
I have definitely found that I can perform virtually any activity that a sighted person can do, it just takes me a little longer.
So, again, the first thing is to move, period.
Get up and begin to explore this new found challenge to move, though slow down Remember, don't stop!
Next, as mentioned in the independent living pages, it is important to obtain some type of mobility training.

So, once you choose how you will feel most comfortable with the idea of mobility and independent activity, you must take the first step!
First get a hold of your local or state's Division of Blind Services, and ask where you might receive mobility training. Most states provide this training along with the training of any sighted guides you may wish to include.
Next, make a call to your local gym or fitness center. Most are more than willing to set you up with a personal plan of exercise and/or training that will fulfill your needs.
Sports
Another great way to help you get back into physical activity is
ASA helps to encourage physically challenged individuals to participate in sports activities. They know that by doing this, and individual wil improve their overall health, gain confidence, avoid depression, introduce and grow social interaction, among many other benefits available through sports participation.
